Thanksgiving became official in Hawaii 14 years before President Abraham Lincoln declared it a national holiday. King Kamehameha III declared December 31 a national holiday of Thanksgiving in 1849, complete with church services and luau, in an effort to strengthen relations between Hawaii and the USA.

Hawaii Thanksgiving celebrations can last a day or longer, as in the old days. Ancient menus likely featured roasted pig, poi, kukui nut, sweet potatoes, fish and bread fruit. Today’s feasts include our favorite foods. Turkey? Let’s imu it! Pass the┬álaulau!
